Great Northwest Readers’ Advisory Unconference

Join us on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at the Hillsboro Public Library (just outside Portland, Oregon) for the first ever Great NW Readers’ Advisory Unconference, brought to you by LibraryReads, and presented by a group of readers’ advisory experts from across the country – including YOU!

Sign up now: attendance is limited to the first 100.

After an informal mixer and voting on the day’s topics, you’ll enjoy a lively presentation by our crew of Readers’ Advisory All Stars, and then “Choose Your Own Adventure” as we join with you exploring just those topics and areas that are the most interesting and useful to you. (If you’ve never unconferenced before, here’s an article on a recent Readers’ Advisory unconference in Connecticut, and here’s a brief post that explains what they are.)

Just $20 gets you a full day of unconference, lunch included (lunch speaker TBA). For those looking to make a weekend of it, the Pacific Northwest Bookseller’s Association Conference has its educational track the next day on Sunday, October 8 at the Jantzen Beach Red Lion.

I’m driving from a distance that morning: can I get there in time?

While the voting and informal mixer start at 10 a.m., the keynote presentation will begin at 11 a.m., which we hope will give everyone plenty of time to get there.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Hillsboro is about 15 miles west of Portland, on Brookwood Parkway (exit 61A) off Route 26. Traffic can at times be heavy coming from Portland (even on a weekend), so you will wan to leave approximately 45 minutes to get from downtown Portland to the Hillsboro Public Library. Public transportation to Hillsboro is available by taking the Blue Line MAX (Hillsboro direction) to either the Hawthorn Farm stop and walking about a mile, or the the Fair Complex stop, where we can arrange for pickup with prior arrangements.
Those driving from Seattle should allow at least four hours travel time to reach Hillsboro. Carpooling is encouraged as a great way to get your unconference rolling. Ample parking is available in the library’s lot.

What about lodging?

There are two hotels within walking distance, both on Brookwood Parkway, The Residence Inn by Marriott Hillsboro/Brookwood (about $150), and Larkspur Landing (about $125).

If you prefer to stay outside of Portland in a place with a lot of charm, we recommend the McMenamins Grand Lodge in Forest Grove ($100 – $150), which offers mainly European-style rooms in an old Masonic Lodge home, complete with saltwater soaking pool, several bars, two restaurants, and a movie theatre.

If you’d rather stay in Portland, there are many options. We would suggest staying on the west side of town for access to public transportation and ease in getting to Hillsboro. Some recommended options include the Society Hotel ($125), the Ace Hotel ($200), Hotel Rose ($200), the Hi-Lo ($250), the Hotel Lucia ($250), the Hotel DeLuxe ($250), and the Kimpton Hotel Monaco ($275). If you are attending the PNBA conference starting on Sunday, you may want to consider the Janzten Beach Red Lion, though be aware traffic on I-5 between Janzten Beach and downtown Portland/points west can be heavy.
